The work deals with the fall of the Shang Dynasty (1600–1046 BC) and the rise to power of the Zhou Dynasty (1046–256 BC); interspersed within this plot are elements of traditional Chinese folklore and Chinese mythology, such as animal spirits that transform into people, wise old men with powers, the use and abuse of bladed weapons, and so on.
The work has had a varied history, as for long periods it was not considered important; Although for some time now, as the novel has established quite well this whole theme of "gods and demons" or "shenmo" (a genre to which the novel The monkey king also belongs, by the way), it is now considered one of the Chinese classics, which is enjoyed by children and adults alike for including action, philosophy, and mythology in (almost) equal parts.
Not surprisingly, the novel has had countless adaptations to comics, films, and other media.
