Lang Shining
Giuseppe Castiglione, better known as Lang Shining (Milan, 1688 - Beijing, 1766), was an Italian-Chinese painter, Italian by birth but who developed most of his art in China, as he was a Jesuit missionary in that country.
Commonly classified as the most successful Western artist among the foreign painters who worked in China, he cultivated a kind of style that was a mix of Italian beauty and oriental subtlety, with highly appreciated works, especially of nature and animals (although he also stood out in the field of portraiture, as he immortalized, for example, the Emperor Qianlong). His work is preserved in the imperial museums of Beijing and Taipei.
