Lev Atamanov

Levon Konstantinovich Atamanyan (Moscow, 1905 - Moscow, 1981) was a director of Russian (Soviet) animation of Armenian origin.

After doing some work in other studios, he goes to work for the famous Soviet animation studio Soyuzmultifilm and there he will develop his best works as animation director, and probably the best works of this studio in general, according to the criteria of this publication.

His work is characterized by having an excellent and very careful, colorful and detailed animation, where the music, of certain importance, accompanies but does not stand out by itself. Among his most famous works we can mention The Scarlet Flower of 1952, a version of the classic French tale Beauty and the Beast; The Golden Antelope (1954) and The Snow Queen (1957), adaptation of the legendary story by Hans Christian Andersen. Curiously, with the first work mentioned and the third one, he took advantage a good handful of years ahead of the animated versions of Walt Disney's studio of these stories (see Disney's Beauty and the Beast and Frozen), when he had already passed away.

Without a doubt, these works and their many other creations are a mainstay in the history of animation in particular and of cinema in general.
