About the film length
May, 21; 2024. By Arscodex
At this precise moment the reader and the writer, together but in different positions, are going to think a little about the footage of the films, their duration, a fact that in addition to helping to categorize them according to this temporal characteristic (short, feature film or series), as already done in another dedicated article in this medium, helps us establish a series of other considerations related to the matter.
At first we can say that currently the footage of feature films coming from Hollywood is shown to be somewhat excessive (exceeding two hours in duration in many cases) which in our opinion is due to two reasons: 1. there is more free time so so much the footage has to be lengthened and 2. television series offer longer entertainment and feature films are therefore trying to "look like" this current serialized format.
This responds, as we say, to two temporally located parameters in our time (greater need to occupy time and competition with streaming serials), therefore in the long term it is a mistake, because as we know it is difficult for us mortals to approach content from another era if it is bombastic and deliberately "stretched", that is, if it is long and with a lot of padding, with little substance, unless for stylistic or other reasons this stretching is justified.
Current copyright laws are beneficial to the creator of relevant content and protect him; so much so that a creator of a script, for example (which is basically a literary document), will have the rights to it for life and even 70 years after death (in a typical scenario of our time). This means that the law is especially benefiting all those successful creators, including musical creation, since the law will guarantee that these person/s have enough money to live, including their heirs for a time as well.
Therefore, from our point of view, it is a mistake to try to artificially lengthen content to justify its purchase and enjoyment in our time since these will have less appeal in the long term. And as we say, although the moment of release is important, it turns out that this work will accompany and be directly linked to the creator throughout his life and for some time after his death, therefore in the long term the extended format (long films and serials) is inadvisable.
As an example we can put content that we enjoy right now from ancient times (yes, ladies and gentlemen, from a long, long time ago). Aesop's fables are a clear example. Succinct content where not a single word is missing or superfluous. The same thing happens, in another order of length, with Sophocles' tragedies, which are designed to be performed in approximately one hour (that is, feature film format but for the short part) and which are read even today with eagerness by various avid readers that swarm on the face of the earth today. Another example is Arabian Nights, where the majority of stories are also characterized by not having any type of addition, or fancy description or this type of matter, so they travel well in time.
Therefore, we can say that if a director or writer or screenwriter or whatever is worth his salt, he should try to make content that is not very extensive, in accordance with the approximate standard that is used for its format, and not go too far, because this would indicate a certain disdain towards the long term and it is the long term, as we know friends, that gives glory, in this field, and in almost everything.
