Astrud Gilberto, the female voice of the bossa-nova, dies

June, 09; 2023. By
This exiting week, the Brazilian singer Astrud Gilberto has died at the age of 83, according to newspapers around the world.

Astrud Evangelina Weinert (that was her full name), was lucky to cross paths in time and place with the creators and developers of that characteristic Brazilian sound, the bossa-nova. Thus, she took the last name of her husband Joâo Gilberto, who was one of the star composers, along with Antonio Carlos Jobim, for example, and who were also singers.

That almost whispering voice, both masculine and feminine, present in the bossa-nova, very sensual, at times disinterested, discouraged, as if sung carelessly, was mainly male, but Astrud knew how to skilfully adapt those silent verses to the sound of a female interpreter, accompanying the brilliant compositions we are talking about.

In short, a heartfelt loss, that gave voice to an era, the 60s / 70s, fixing forever that characteristic Brazilian sound and delighting music lovers all over the world.
