His first appearance, dated 1887, places him in the environment of late-romanticism or also the period known as the Victorian era (both coincide in time, the latter being a particularity of the former).
His very unique clothing, his pipe, his cap, his suit in the purest "British" style, his intelligence and his perhaps bad tendency to use certain drugs, give him a unique image in the world of literature.
Following in the wake of The Murders in the Rue Morgue, a fictional story written by the American writer Edgar Allan Poe approximately 50 years earlier, Conan Doyle "appropriates" certain elements and literary twists present in the aforementioned story to give free rein to his imagination and thus create, perhaps, the best-known myth in terms of detective novels.
Many films have been made about this character, together with his assistant Dr. Watson, also an admirer of the figure of Sherlock, of which we can highlight the one by Guy Ritchie and the animated series directed by Hayao Miyazaki.
