Sleepy Hollow
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, or simply Sleepy Hollow is a horror/romantic tale written in 1820 by Washington Irving.
It is one of the first purely American stories (remember its author was one of the first genuine American writers) and in addition to being wonderful (or perhaps more because of that) it usually inaugurates the Halloween season every year.
It has been brought to the screen on several occasions, including an early silent version of the same name in 1922; Walt Disney's 1949 animated short; the masterful version by Tim Burton (and starring Johnny Depp) from 1999, and a four-season series from 2013.
