Dire Straits

Dire Straits
Anglo-Saxon pop / rock group consisting of a series of musicians led by singer and guitarist Mark Knopfler, alma mater of the band on the other hand. Together they have left us a good series of themes that stand out in the music in an outstanding way, thanks to the good work mainly of the aforementioned Mark.

Active during the end of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first, this band gathers and collects the best compositional, interpretative and, in general, musical works by Mark Knopfler, a former teacher converted to a guitarist and singer. With a voice, say, difficult, in the sense that his voice is not precisely the canon of the melodious (perhaps in the manner of Lana del Rey), manages to overcome this obstacle and prints to his songs a warm and bright vocal line, contrary to what it might seem a priori.

But that is not all. Mark tried very hard to try to stand out with his guitar, and he did so. He created his own technique that we do not know where it really comes from, but that leads him to playing electric and acoustic guitars as if he drank glasses of water, with an absolutely outstanding technique that allows him to develop 100% the music he has in his head, while he sings when playing live, which is worthy of admiration, since the complexity of their guitar lines are accompanied by their voice that sounds at the same time in their concerts. Who writes these lines is considered tremendously fortunate to have been able to attend one of them in the Las Ventas Bullring in Madrid and verify that this fact is true.

But the good news usually arrives in duplicate or triplicate, and that is that the brooch of all this is put by his musical compositions, which stand out as we have commented, staying at a tremendously melodic level (as this publication likes).

Anyway, the other members of the band, with this leader, could already be amateurs that they were going to do it well. Thus, the keyboards (which harmonize with the guitar as usually does not happen), the drums, the bass, and other instruments combine with the voice and the main guitars as if it were celestial music.

Mark takes advantage of the hegemony in pop / rock of his Anglo-Saxon mother tongue to get on the English music wave and thus reach higher. In this way, Dire Straits, the band of Mark Knopfler, has left us a good number of pop / rock songs that sound and resonate throughout the world: "Brothers in arms", "Sultans of Swing", "Romeo and Juliet","Telegraph Road ","Money for nothing ","Walk of Life", and a long etcetera, which rivals the best compositions in their genre such as the songs of their compatriots The Beatles.

Later, Mark Knopfler alone has flirted with folk / country and made soundtracks for movies, a recurring theme by the way in his previous lyrics. But the bulk of his work is linked and will be forever to his band, Dire Straits. And from here we can only say: Long live Dire Straits! Long live Mark Knopfler!
