The news broke recently, and has been reported by numerous newspapers worldwide: the streaming platform Netflix has won the bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery and, pending approval from US antitrust authorities, will proceed with absorbing the company's assets.
It appears that Netflix is targeting the film and television studio, meaning all the lucrative intellectual properties, including the film and television rights to some of today's most recognizable characters: Superman, Batman, Harry Potter, and others.
The deal has valued the acquired company (Warner Bros. Discovery) at $82.7 billion, to be paid with a combination of cash and Netflix stock.
Following Warner's initial listing, several larger companies entered the bidding for the potential acquisition, including Paramount Skydance, Comcast, and Netflix. It appears that Netflix was finally the company that reached an agreement because it offered the most cash to shareholders.
This acquisition has raised some concerns about Warner Bros.' future film releases, as it remains to be seen whether Netflix will continue the theatrical release strategy for the acquired company's films.
Other concerns have been raised by the general public, with some comments suggesting that Warner Bros.' "cinematic quality" is higher than Netflix's and could also be negatively impacted. Netflix has specialized in a rapid release schedule, compared to Warner Bros.' smaller number of releases, supposedly of higher "cinematic quality," as mentioned.
In short, this is significant news for the global audiovisual ecosystem, as Netflix is present in millions of homes worldwide, while Warner Bros. was a well-established company with over 100 years of history.
